One of the many landmarks of Penang, Fort Cornwallis is the largest standing fort here in Malaysia. It is a star-shaped fort that took shape when Captain Sir Francis Light took possession of the island from the Sultan of Kedah.
Surprisingly, even though it is called a fort, Fort Cornwallis has never engaged in any battles.

In the fort, you will see a statue of the man that grace our history books. Captain Sir Francis Light was the founder of the British colony of Penang and also the capital, George Town. Interestingly enough, his son, Colonel William Light is the founder of Adelaide, Australia. Must be in their blood :)

Like I said, Fort Cornwallis is a fort that never did battle but what is a fort without cannons? So, of course lah, Fort Cornwallis got lots of cannons. The oldest being the Sri Rembai Cannon. Even got warning sign not to lean on it. In case it crumbles from age.
Oh, and that is not Komtar as reported in my Flickr. Its in the totally wrong direction. Apparently, not all tall, thin buildings in Penang is Komtar.
So, that’s all for this week, see you again next Monday!
