This is probably going to be a regular Monday thing as I review the movies I watched over the weekend. I saw Wolverine, He’s Just Not That Into You, Sell out! and Star Trek last week and surprisingly, Star Trek gets top billing.
Star Trek was quite a pleasant surprise with a strong cast although you will have trouble remembering their names but you will certainly recognise their faces. You have got Harold from Harold & Kumar as Sulu, Sylar as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Eric Bana as Nero and heck you even got Winona Ryder as Spock’s mom.
I wasn’t expecting much especially after the disappointment of Dragon Ball and Wolverine (talk about it later) but Star Trek definitely showed how an adaptation of a classic should be. The pacing was perfect and the absolute class acting from everyone might just make Star Trek the best movie for this year. If this is the direction of the movie, bring on Star Trek 2!

What should have been the best movie of the year since it is Wolverine, turned out to be possibly one of the rotten tomatoes of the year. Put this up next to Dragonball because it is that lousy. Other than Hugh Jackman cementing himself as Wolverine and a cool Deadpool (at the start only), there isn’t really much to take away from the movie.
Weapon 11 was a laugh. They butchered the comic. And it is a movie that sacrificed character development and a sensible plot for mindless action. Goes to show that big budget doesn’t translate to a good movie. Too bad they raked in so much at the box office that a sequel is already inked. Let’s hope it is better.

Another movie with major star power. Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, and Jennifer Connelly to name a few, you would have expected it to be good. But instead it was a bore. I could barely keep myself awake during the movie.
The worse happened to Drew Barrymore whose character wasn’t even given room to grow. Pretty much just someone who happened to be there and therefore linked to the story. In the end, the movie was dull, very dull.

It is quite rare for me to get excited over a local movie but I did over Sell Out! Was I disappointed? Quite a bit. Was it a good movie? It was watchable. In the end, I thought it tried too hard when the best moments in the movie came from its simplicity.
I thought the musical scenes (great lyrics) were a bit out of place and I particularly didn’t like the main actor split into two personalities – physically! I understand what the movie was trying to say but I think if they had kept it simple, it would have been delivered better.
I love the tone and colours of the movie – very lomo-ish although this is a term more suited for photography. But some of the shaky camerawork was annoying. The lack of proper links between each scene was also a bit jarring and I think it could be improved.
All in all, not one of the best local movies so far but definitely one of the better efforts.
