Back to Penang again and this time its about Khoo Kongsi, one of the UNESCO heritage sites in Penang. This is one of the most distinctive Chinese clan associations in Malaysia. It boasts of a lineage that goes back 650 years ago and of course, the main clan house is quite a sight to behold.

The full name, Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, or Khoo Kongsi for short, is quite hidden from view. You might miss the entrance the first time you drive past so make sure you look out for the colourful billboard. The Khoo clan, together with with Cheah, Yeoh, Lim and Tan, formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in the early days of Penang.

It is now listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site as it is located within the buffer zone. Well, actually, George Town was listed as a Heritage Site, so Khoo Kongsi was just part of the 86 establishments within the same zone.
There has been quite some controversy on that listing as there are some major developments within the buffer zone which might violate the rules. But I don’t think any of them are near Khoo Kongsi. So, if you are around Penang, take a look at this place.
