A while back ago, last month, I attended or rather helped run a Community Connections Day at Starbucks Tropicana City Mall. The idea is to get people together through a single cup of coffee and through a common interest. The interest?
Board games.

But no, there were no Monopoly, no Scrabble, no Game of Life. We were doing a round of games that many have not even heard of. Settlers of Catan, Werewolves, Blokus, Wasabi, Citadels – just to name a few. The overwhelming response from the community was great and to see them enjoying themselves was just reward for a job well done.

Of course, kudos goes to the staff of Starbucks Tropicana City Mall, some volunteers we had and Ben, the manager for taking this on. It takes a lot of faith and trust to put a relatively unknown hobby here in Malaysia and associating a big brand’s name to it.

And not only did Starbucks get an increase in coffee order that day, the smiles and laughter around the outlet would have generated substantial interest from passers by. Tropicana City Mall is not exactly the most happening mall in town, but on that day, it was.

And while the games may seem complicated or look complicated, board games are essentially designed for all ages. So even kids can join in the fun. In fact, it is better to start them young! Better do so now before they glue themselves to the TV.
So, my thanks goes out to Starbucks Tropicana City Mall and do drop by Toybox if you are interested in taking a look at these new games hitting town.
