The Proposal

With the summer blockbusters almost all out of the way (exception of GI Joe), I can finally catch the other movies. This week, it was two chick flicks with one Chinese movie vying for my attention. Surprisingly, the first movie of last week was probably the best.

I wasn’t expecting much from The Proposal although I like Ryan Reynold’s acting. But Sandra Bullock? I don’t know. But it was an extremely good movie. Very funny and very well done. Both of them had great chemistry and although it felt a little rushed in the end with a “are you sure this can even happen” kinda ending, the funnies in the middle more than makes up for it.

Look out for the Sandra Bullock dance-rap scene, she will surpass Cameron Diaz soon. The Proposal is definitely highly recommended.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

After The Proposal, it was followed up with another chick flick. This time around, Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner is up on the screen. While it was funny at times, it didn’t have me up in stitches like The Proposal. It seems that Matthew is fast getting stereotyped into this kind of roles. The bad boy with a secret heart of gold.

But it was good enough to watch and if you girls like Matthew, there is a lot of him shown here. You won’t want to miss this.

Overheard

It was a choice between Taking Pelham 123 or Overheard but its been a while since I last watched a Chinese movie so Overheard won the vote. This is a sorta dark movie filled with moral dilemmas. And at the end, the lesson delivered is that consequences can sometimes be a heavy price to pay especially if you are in the wrong. It has very strong acting especially from Louis Koo and Lau Ching Wan but Daniel Wu managed to hold his own as well.

While not as brilliant as Infernal Affairs, the movie was still very well-paced and there was enough character development to make you care. Hollywood movies should learn from Hong Kong movies when it comes to character development. The Hong Kong movies always manage to pull it off.

So, if you are thinking of catching a good Chinese movie this week, then Overheard it is.

This is it for Monday Movie Review, its been a while since I last did one, but I am sure the summer blockbusters were adequately covered.
