Poker King

This is another weekend where we watched only one movie. I know that many have recommended Phobia 2 but Sharon is not a big fan of horror movies so we tend to steer clear of that. I am not a big fan of concert movies so This Is It was out of our radar screen as well.

After removing quite a number of movies from the list, we were left with Poker King.

Louis Koo is fast dominating the Chinese movies with more movies with him in it this year than any other year. Even from my failing memory, I remembered at least 3 movies starring him before this one hit the screens. He is proving to be quite the versatile actor and his work with Lau Ching Wan is also a formula that will rake in the box office sales.

The movie is about Texas Hold ‘Em poker and it makes for an exciting game on the TV screen. After all the Gods and Saints of Gamblers, this movie needed to move into an arena of its own. While it did not live up to the classics, it was quite fun to watch.

There are moments in the movie that will have you bursting with laugther but sometimes, the director tries to weave in too many characters and it all becomes a convoluted mess. Particularly the redundant character of Lau Ching Wan’s mentor.

Hong Kong’s comedies of late has disappointed me but this one was just about right. There wasn’t any “over” acting or sudden use of inappropriate CGI moments. In conclusion, Poker King might not be the best comedy ever, or the best comedy this year but it is worth the ticket price.

Now I feel like playing some Texas Hold ‘Em.
