As far as disaster and end-of-the-world movies go, 2012 is going to be the biggest of them all so far. The movie is about a popular theory out there that we will all die in 2012 where something about some planets and sun and other stuff lines up and we will all be flooded, or consumed by earthquake.\

Bring in the usual Americans save the world, the token evil American who doesn’t care about the mass population, some conspiracy theory and a man down in the dumps saving his family and other people along the way, you got a recipe for a Hollywood blockbuster.

Of course, it also helps that the CG you use in the movie is top notch. And that is practically what I felt at the end of the day. 2012 is a great movie, CG-wise. Other than that, it is pretty much run of the mill. There is nothing new that you do not expect. The plot is quite predictable and you pretty much know what is going on without the first few minutes. Of course, the trailer didn’t help to cover the mystery by telling everyone that there is a conspiracy.

The casting is how do I say, not exactly the best. Danny Glover is a fine actor but somehow he doesn’t carry the air or the charisma to be the American president. You just feels like he is one caring father or grandfather at the end of the movie. John Cusack does what John Cusack does best and that is being himself.

Overall, if one were to watch the movie, you will be “ooh and ahh” over the massive destruction of the planet Earth. And that is not necessary a bad thing. Just make sure you don’t expect extremely good script or a fantastic plot and you will enjoy yourself.

It’s an exciting ride but not one with lots of substance, just lots of flair.
