Its taken a long while for any good zombie movies to be made. At least good in my definition. I am not talking about the Resident Evils, the 28 Weeks but a zombie movie where killing zombie is made to look like fun. And no mention of some Government conspiracy or some screwed up scientific experiment. Just normal, gun-n-run, hack-n-slash, chop-n-dice, action zombie movie.
We will eternally be grateful for 2009 as it brought us Zombieland. It is funny, but not cheesy and it is fun seeing them shoot, chop, club, kick the zombies for fun. There is no need for too much of a plot, just survivors finding each other and fighting the zombie horde to stay alive. The comedy is subtle, not slapstick and the acting is spot on.
They even found the time to introduce the characters and their background, made easier that theres only 4 of them but still, goes to show you don’t need to more than 2 hours to generate depth. If it was up to me, I would have Zombieland sweeping up the Oscars but of course, that isn’t up to me. Zombieland probably won win any major awards but I hope that they will be happy that they made every zombie fan out there a happy person.

I officially crown this my favourite Chinese movie of 2009. And it shows the other Chinese movie that you don’t need a 2-parter 3-hours long-drawn movie to make it epic. The director could have easily gone and made this the most action-packed movie you would have ever seen. After all, if you have Donnie Yen, how hard can that be?
Luckily the movie didn’t fall into that trap. Instead it spent the first half of the movie, developing the characters, unveiling the plot and pretty much left the last hour of the movie a climax of sorts. Its one of those movie where you already know the ending, and who will die but you will still feel for the characters when they do.
When you have Jacky Cheung and Simon Yam in cameo roles, you know that everyone else that got a meatier role will deliver their fair share of acting credentials. And boy, did they deliver. The only person that sticks out like a sore thumb is probably Leon Lai, but not because his acting was bad. But they probably missed a step when they unveil his final look.
Its enough to say that he drew hordes of laughter when I watched it, and I don’t think that was the reaction the movie aimed for. Other than that slight blip, it was a movie that I can watch again and probably again. And I don’t usually watch my movies more than once.

Cool stuff, looks like my next show would be Assasins and Bodyguard :D
@Mark Leo Apparently lots of ppl didn’t like it as much as I did :P
